With his team already down 4-0 midway through the second period against the New York Rangers at MSG, Alexander Ovechkin threw a low hip-check at Dan Girardi before dropping the mits to square off against Brandon Dubinsky. It appeared Ovechkin wanted the fight more than his counterpart, the Capitals captain fared pretty well for someone who has been in just one official NHL scrap prior to Sunday’s game. AS usual he was booed every time he touched the puck at MSG as throughout the game, Ovechkin finished with 4 shots on goal and was a -1.
Seeing the captain throw some punches did nothing for the team as shortly after the Rangers would score a shorthanded goal en-route to a 7-0 win. Semyon Varlamov only made 13 saves and was never pulled due to back-up Michal Neuvirth being ill while on the bench. Varly was left to dry as the defense, who was missing Mike Green to the flu looked lost. The loss would extend the Capitals losing streak to six games for the first time since 2007, the seven goal margin last happened three times to the team in 2005.
