Albeit a 1-year deal, Alexander Semin got his contract amidst a contract year. DC’s other Alex inked a new deal earlier today to continue his career in the nation’s capital. Prior to his latest injury (to his hip) Semin was tied in the league for hat-tricks with 3 and finds himself third in scoring on the Caps this year. Semin last signed an extension for $6 million last year and sources claim this year’s is $6.7.
While it looks he is destined for another team at some point in his career since he won’t commit to the team long-term, Semin will be there for at least two more cup runs where many argue he disappears. In six seasons in the NHL and with the Caps, the Krasnoyarsk native is already 11th all-time in goals in franchise history.
While the slight raise in pay secures his short-term future, it makes his name in trade rumors drop since teams could have acquired him cheaper before today.
