Last night, Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin surpassed Petr Bondra as the franchise leader in points. Ovi’s first period assist (below) gave him career point 826 achieving the feat in 270 less games than the Slovakian great.
Ovechkin becomes the first Russian in NHL history to lead any team in total points. Now ascending through the Capitals record books, the 28-year-old needs just 44 goals to surpass Bondra again for most all-time and 14 helpers to leapfrog Michael Pivonka.
Its highly plausible to assume by the time the dust settles on the 2014-15 NHL season, Ovechkin will sit atop his teams major scoring categories in the nation’s capital. Congratulations to one of the brightest stars hockey has ever known.
