The Dallas Stars announced over the weekend that 19-year-old winger would undergo surgery on a nagging hip injury. The Chelyabinsk native struggled with a the injury during training camp and was placed on the injured reserve two games into the season. Nine games later, he made his 20414 debut only to be shut down and placed back on the shelf after just four games.
Nichkin’s first season saw him score 14 goals and 20 assists while getting his first senior call-up to the Russian national team in Sochi. Adding insult to injury(literally), Nichushkin’s fellow comrade and mentor Sergei Gonchar was recently traded to Montreal leaving the youngster as the lone Russian in the Stars locker room.
The Stars estimate a near April return for the forward hopefully in time to contend for a post-season spot. Dallas currently find themselves last in the central division in the early going of their 2014/15 campaign. They’ll look to weather the storm without one their most promising talents who surely didn’t envision his sophomore season going the way it has.
