NHL Free Agency Day 1 Round-Up

13588706_10101345712308804_475544171_oYesterday’s free agent frenzy saw a few Russians take their talents to new places, or be rewarded by their current teams with contract extensions. Let’s take a quick glance around the league.

Alexei Marchenko re-signed with the Detroit Red Wings for two years at $2.9 million. The 24-year-old spent most of last season as the third-pair blue-liner where he played 60 games and notched 11 points.

Anton Khudobin returned to the Boston Bruins after spending the last few years in Anaheim and Carolina. Khudobin was demoted to the Ducks AHL affiliate midway through last season but his play was clearly good enough for the Bruins to welcome him back where he will resume backing-up Tuuka Rask just like he did in 2013. The contract is for $2.4 million for two years.

Fedor Tyutin after being out by the Columbus Blue Jackets after 8 years of service, the 32-year old defensemen was signed by the Colorado Avalanche. A one-year deal for $2 million provides the Avs a veteran presence and a fellow Russian for Semyon Varlamov to mesh with. Tyutin is coming off a horrendous season where he scored just 3 points in 61 games. Perhaps a change of scenery will allow him to find his game. In 803 career NHL games, he has 251 points.

Andre Vasilevskiy signed a three-year $10.5 million extension with the Tampa Bay Lightning. After appearing in 24 starts, the 21-year-old took over from Ben Bishop during the Eastern Conference Finals against the eventual champion Penguins nearly taking the Bolts to consecutive cup appearances. The signing could signal the organizations faith is leaning more towards Vasy than Bishop who has one year left on his current contract.

Mikhail Sergachev signed an entry-level deal less than a week after being drafted 9th overall in the 2016 NHL Draft. Look for him to feature in the opening games before being sent down to the minors.
